A term floating around the office the other day, which started to garner some laughs, quickly became blog worthy after an Urban Dictionary search. This seeming innocent business term “it is what it is” has been lifted to new levels of honesty but the crowdsourced dictionary service.

Next time you feel like you are stuck with what you were given and are about to drop the line “it is what it is,” try digging deeper for the real meaning, “funk it.”

You may be wondering in what context was this term used. It is equally important as to the new meaning of we have found.

While in a web site design review meeting for a new project, a member in the meeting dropped the line in reference to a design that would not carry over to mobile devices well in a responsive web design.

With my personal web design, I try never to put myself in a position where my design can’t transform at breakpoints in a responsive design. The Daylight team was startled by this individual essentially saying “fuck it, the design is not changing,” we’ll just figure it out during development, a.k.a. “lets do it live.”
